ACT Prep and College Essays

Description: This class will focus on preparing students for the four sections of the ACT test (English, Math, Reading, and Science), will devote time to the writing components of both the ACT and SAT, and will help students develop college application essays. The class components will include learning and practicing strategies specific to the ACT, reviewing content related to the four sections, discussing writing strategies, evaluating sample essays, and brainstorming application essay topics. Outside of class, students will watch a variety of supplemental videos, take sample tests for each of the sections, continue their review of the content included in the ACT, write essays for the ACT and SAT, and write rough and final drafts of college application essays. Students will use the text, ACT Premium Prep, and a variety of handouts related to the ACT, SAT, and Common Application. This class will be team taught by Mrs. Witthuhn and Mrs. Rohmann.

Tutor: Kim Witthuhn works as a professional editor and has taught literature, writing, grammar, history, geography, and various electives at homeschool organizations over the last 20 years, including homeschooling her own children. She is also a homeschooling and career consultant and enjoys helping people discover the unique design God gave them. Mrs. Witthuhn graduated from Concordia University with a BA in English and Social Science Education. She lives in Eden Prairie with her husband and enjoys studying the Bible, reading, learning, and spending time with family.

Tutor: Kirsten Rohmann holds a B.A. in Chemistry from St. Olaf College and a Masters in Business Administration from the Carlson School, University of MN. She worked for 10 years doing market research analysis, deriving answers to business questions from large quantities of data. She’s homeschooled both of her children, one now in college and the other in high school. In this capacity she has tutored/taught classes in many areas including Latin and the sciences. Mrs. Rohmann has an innate love of math and loves to help students understand it better. She works as an independent consultant in market research analysis and enjoys volunteering at church. Mrs. Rohmann lives in Minnetonka with her husband and daughter.

Cost:  $220, $230, or $240 (depending on registration date)
