We have noticed that parents
sometimes have trouble navigating the transition from
elementary school to Jr. High (especially if it's your oldest
child), so we wanted to give a few pointers that may help your
student be successful.
Here are some things to expect:
· The homework load will be more than it was in eCHAT.
· The material will be more challenging and require higher order thinking skills.
· Your child should expect to have to write more.
Here are some Do's and Don'ts to help your child with the transition:
· Don't assume that since they are in Jr. High that they will suddenly be able to manage their time and get their work done. (o: They need to be trained how to do this!
· Don't think that because they are in full course classes taught by someone else that you do not have to be involved.
· Don't assume that your child is getting their work done on time. Check!
· Don't wait until the last week to find out if they have missing assignments or have incomplete work.
· Do ask questions. ("What is your assignment?", "Have you finished your assignment?", "Are you understanding the assignment?", "When is your next test?", etc.)
· Do ask to see work as it is sent home. Go over tests together to help define trouble areas.
· Do make sure their assignments are finished.
· Do make sure they are following their tutor's instructions and learning to be thorough in their work.
It can be tough for a 7th grader to adjust to the rigors of Jr. High, and you can really help them feel confident if you stay involved and help them learn to be independent and responsible students. It doesn't happen overnight. (o:
